I am a fan of several independent presses:
Tin House tops my list. This Portland-based publisher puts out edgy accessible work that can just knock your socks off, and they support the literary community through workshops.
Omnidawn Press, in Richmond, California, publishes poetry and prose. They also sponsor writing contests from time to time.
WTAW Press (Why There Are Words), founded and directed by author Peg Alford Pursell, has published some of my favorite books. They sponsor readings and offer interesting volunteer opportunities.
Torrey House Press promotes “conservation through literature.” I discovered them through the great essayist Nicole Walker.

Hollowdeck Press—founded by the incomparable Max Regan. Here a writer can find everything they need: from classes to community, book lectures to workshops, coaching, and developmental editing.
The Writer's Workshop @ Authors Publish offers fantastic lectures (for free!), wonderful classes, and guidance for publishing your work.
Bookfox Academy, featuring John Fox. John sends out inspirational emails and offers online classes for a great price. I enjoy his expertise and his energy.

The tomato timer is great for intense bursts of writing. When you can't sit down for hours at a time, 25 minutes will have to do.
Writetrack is my favorite word counter for when you just have to generate loads of content.

And I have a favorite podcast:
Between the Covers, by David Naimon (sponsored by Tin House). David interviews authors about their books, their work, and their lives. The depth of these conversations is astonishing. I inevitably walk away informed & inspired.
